Full Turnkey Water Management Upgrade for Retirement Village in Johannesburg, Gauteng

Ensuring a safe, reliable, and sustainable water supply is essential for any large residential community — especially one supporting elderly residents with daily care needs. At a retirement village in Johannesburg, home to more than 1,700 units and three frail-care facilities, uninterrupted access to clean water is critical to both daily living and medical support.

To strengthen the village's long-term water security, reduce reliance on municipal supply, and support sustainability goals, we delivered a full turnkey water-management solution designed specifically for the scale and operational demands of this large retirement community.

Strengthening Water Security with Groundwater Supply

One of the project's core components was the installation of a borehole system, providing the village with an independent water source capable of supplying the site during municipal shortages or peak-demand periods, creating independence from municipal infrastructure.

This secondary supply ensures that residents and healthcare teams always have access to essential water services, even during unexpected disruptions. Our objective was to maintain the water supply and ensure consistent water quality.

    SANS 10299 & SANS 241-Compliant Water Treatment

Given the sensitive nature of the environment, water quality was a top priority. We implemented a treatment process designed to meet SANS 241 – national drinking-water quality regulations. This ensures that all treated water — whether sourced from the borehole or municipal lines — is safe for consumption, cleaning, and clinical use across the entire retirement village and all three frail-care units.

Containerised Water Treatment Plant for Efficiency & Flexibility

To support both operational efficiency and ease of maintenance, we installed a containerised water treatment plant. This modular solution provides compact, efficient filtration and purification, rapid installation and accessibility, treatment compatibility for both municipal and borehole inputs, and solar power independence from power outages.

It's a system well-suited to large, multi-building residential properties where space, routing, and maintenance all need careful coordination.

    Solar-Powered System for Sustainable Operation

Energy resilience is an essential component of modern water treatment. To reduce dependence on grid electricity and lower long-term running costs, the treatment plant was integrated with a solar-powered system. This renewable-energy addition provides lower operational expenditure, reduced environmental impact, and continuous operation during power outages or load-shedding.

For a site of this scale, solar integration creates meaningful long-term savings while supporting South Africa's wider sustainability goals.

Durable Steel Water Storage Tanks for Reliable Supply

To complete the system, we installed steel water storage tanks, ensuring that treated, compliant water is always available. These tanks provide large-volume storage capacity, strong durability in outdoor conditions, a reliable reserve for emergency or peak-demand scenarios, and modular options for site-specific conditions.

With the combined borehole, treatment, and storage system operating together — and overseen by real-time monitoring and compliance — the village now benefits from a fully stabilised and highly reliable water-supply network.

    Project Outcome

The retirement village in Johannesburg now has a robust, energy-efficient, and sustainable water management system built to support a large and medically dependent community. The completed solution provides a secure secondary water supply, safe SANS-compliant drinking water, lower ongoing energy and operational costs, reduced reliance on municipal infrastructure, and environmentally responsible water treatment.

By combining containerised treatment technology, solar power, borehole integration, and durable storage, the facility now benefits from a long-term water strategy designed to support both everyday living and critical health-care operations.
